Project Summary

So much of Sub-Saharan Africa in its vastness is regarded as a cacophony of maladies, often birthed and sustained by generations of poverty. Few efforts have moved the needle in a positive direction. This problem will be solved using lessons learnt where the churches awakened from their ranks an army of volunteers who filled with passion from their pain, responding to the devastation HIV/AIDS caused. The church rose, resisted and created a template that can be used to fight other present or future developmental problems. Building on this, in our target areas of Central Africa, we want to use 100 and Change to systematically and strategically awaken churches to awaken human potential, passion, capacity; connect them in virtual collaborative communities networking their local world, and the world for serendipitous creation of collaborators, and more who go wherever their passion leads them to affect their and other’s transformation beyond HIV/AIDS.

Problem Statement

Challenges of poverty, poor access to health and education services, human rights violations and tribal/religious injustices are faced in the sub-saharan Africa, today. These problems affect men, women, children, and other people with different vulnerabilities, such as the disabled. All over the earth, from persons with the most rudimentary view of the planet, to international development scholars and professionals, when asked about places with the most entrenched world problems, much of Sub-Saharan Africa comes high on the list, linked to a plethora of concepts these all have of ‘poverty’ that is generational. We will not take the space here to list the statistics in different places of deaths, daily income of $1.00 per day vs. $2.00. The outcomes of the many faces of poverty generation after generation is without doubt overwhelming in its scope. Rather than distill the complex interrelated issues, we will consider the problem through a different lens. The scope of the problem we want to note in this Problem Statement is looking at the entrenchment of characteristics that stunt the very human capacity of changing the situations they are in. Change these characteristics in people, and the people will change everything. These include what is often thought of as the keys to self-actualization: Beliefs about themselves, their situation, understanding of systems and their mindsets, values, beliefs, connectivity/linkages to opportunity, leadership. The church is one of the influential entities that has historically and can help to change mindsets and contribute to positive transformation of beliefs and value systems.

Solution Overview

In the throes of the HIV/AIDS Pandemic, Churches and faith networks were awakened as they found their mission, passion and potential in people. They built capacity in an army of thousands of volunteer caregivers in hard hit African countries go forth, changing mindsets against stigma, start schools to educate orphans, etc. Using lessons learned, people with changed mindsets from helplessness to mobilized, also formed community savings groups, and then cooperatives, birthing transformation. We want to apply these working solutions to take the next step in awakening potential and passion from Zambia, to central Africa, and make it viral beyond. Faith entities are excellent delivery and sustainability mechanisms because of their prominence, permanence, convening power in virtually every community in our target areas African countries. This effort can easily be embedded into the Church’s DNA- spreading the initiative virally of making all passionate agents of change in their interests, improving the lives of people and their communities. This effort will create the pathways to network to pass along best practices, and remove hindrances that have previously prevented or stalled unified approaches: 1-Potential Awakened and Actualized- Training of trainers with proven tools to equip people as change agents who awaken passion/interest, forge groups to develop and deploy these in services/business. 2-Use online virtual collaborative communities to connect faith entities for serendipitous networking and education in a range of vocations. 3) Peace between peoples; tools to facilitate relationships affirming all of humanity is of value.
