Project Summary

Are you Listening? To grow, learn, care, and improve, we must first listen. The ability to listen, to hear and to engage is fundamental, yet we are not adapting and evolving our abilities to our current environment. We have more ways to communicate, but does it bring us any closer to understanding each other? We have a researched proven ability to address this disconnect in society. The key is our low risk/high impact solution, aimed to improve listening through our continuing innovative approach. By creating more comprehensive listeners, we create a more inclusive and understanding environment better suited to really hear each other. We want to address the gap of technology and build connected hearts.

Problem Statement

Are we truly listening? Society is at a crossroads in terms of our future. We have continued conflict across the world, and growing intolerance of others. This conflict is the source of cultural, geographical, and socio-economical issues. It can be traced back to the inability to accept, to care for, and to really listen to each other. What is stopping us from connecting? Research confirms the need to address comprehensive listening (#1).Too often our society tries to address these issues when people reach adulthood, while more impactful solutions can be achieved by working with young children. Researchers, teachers, parents and professionals have come to understand that we need innovative methods of teaching to address the new world that represents society today. We need to increase our efforts to nurture the fundamental ability of listening, beyond pockets of inspirations embraced by our organization. In order to have a well-balanced society one must have the ability to become comprehensive listeners, to have compassion and to connect in a positive and creative way with others.“Each person has inside a basic decency and goodness. If he listens to it and acts upon it, he is giving a great deal of what it is the world needs most. It is not complicated but it takes courage. It takes courage for a person to listen to his own goodness and act upon it.” - Pablo Casals.

Solution Overview

The Suzuki Early Childhood Education (SECE) is based on a proven study in The Academy of Sciences and other academic proven research. Studies have showed infants and parents participated in active music class, have more positive social developmental trajectories and advanced brain responses (#3/#9). Parent testimonies and videos are readily available at Suzuki Association of the Americas website (www.suzukiassociation.org). This proven method has already been spread to other countries by our Artistic Director, Wan Tsai Chen. She has and continues travelling to the Americas and Asia to train new SECE teachers. Our next step is to take the program to local schools, libraries, community centres, and local health care providers where this solution can be accessible to the general population. This will allow families with multiple social, cultural and economic backgrounds to participate in a variety of local community based locations. This is a uniquely inclusive and accepting solution. In the future we envision sharing this method with all generations by collaborating with senior centres, teens, and young adults. While listening is a challenging metric to measure, the number of teachers trained and participants joining the program will be our benchmark for measuring success and impact documented and reportable over the five year grant period. In addition, collaborating with academic institutes will result in further research noting the multiple benefits of this solution.
